A man in battered homemade armor climbs onto an elderly horse and rides out across the plains of Spain.
He is looking for giants.

His neighbor Sancho Panza rides beside him on a donkey. Sancho can see that the things ahead are windmills. He says so, clearly, more than once. Don Quixote charges anyway.

What follows is one of the greatest stories ever written: the adventure of Don Quixote de la Mancha and his faithful squire Sancho Panza, two ordinary men from the flat plain of La Mancha who ride out into the world together, one of them seeing it as it should be and one of them seeing it as it is, and both of them learning something extraordinary from the difference.

This Bergan Classics Enhanced Edition adapts the original novel by Miguel de Cervantes for readers ages eight through eleven, covering both Part One and Part Two in nine chapters written to be read independently or aloud together. Don Quixote charges at windmills and flocks of sheep, liberates galley slaves and navigates the mockery of a wealthy Duke, and Sancho Panza governs an island for ten days before resigning because the road is better. The story ends as it must: at home, with what matters, and with the answer to the question the whole adventure was asking.

Every chapter includes Before You Read questions to warm up thinking before reading, Discussion Questions to deepen understanding after reading, and a Vocabulary List with clear definitions for young readers. The back matter brings the world of the story to life: the real La Mancha you can still visit today, the books of chivalry that Alonso Quijano loved, three recipes from a seventeenth-century Spanish kitchen, and four hundred years of readers around the world finding the same truth in the same windmills.

For readers who have ever wanted to get on a horse and right what is wrong: this is your book.
