Description

The Palmer Method of Business Writing is one of the most influential handwriting manuals of the twentieth century. Developed by American penman Austin Norman Palmer, this practical system of cursive penmanship teaches clear, rapid, uniform writing through disciplined movement and repeated practice drills.

The Palmer Method is intended for students, teachers, and anyone seeking a fluent and legible hand, and teaches cursive through whole-arm movement rather than slow finger-drawing. Its lessons progress through fundamental movement drills, individual letters, and connected writing, with Palmer’s own handwritten exemplars reproduced throughout.

This edition is a carefully restored facsimile of a 1920 printing of The Palmer Method of Business Writing . It preserves the complete original interior, pagination, handwritten specimens, photographs, and distinctive landscape format of the century-old copybook.

Unlike modern re-typesettings or revised adaptations, this edition has been prepared with the aim of retaining the character of the original book. The source copy comes from public-domain photographs taken by the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives. Each page has been cleaned and straightened individually: aged paper backgrounds were lightened, dust and scanning marks removed, and damaged or truncated text carefully repaired by reference to other copies of the same edition. The small irregularities of the original printing—and of Palmer’s actual pen strokes—remain.

The book is presented in an 8½ × 6-inch landscape format, closely following the proportions and practical orientation of the 1920 original. The horizontal pages allow the copybook to lie open above the writer’s paper, making the exercises and exemplars easy to follow while practicing.

Inside you will find: • Palmer’s original system of muscular-movement handwriting
• Progressive penmanship drills and movement exercises
• Complete uppercase and lowercase cursive instruction
• Practice in words, sentences, numerals, and business writing
• Palmer’s original handwritten exemplars
• The complete instructional content and pagination of the 1920 edition
• A restored facsimile interior rather than a modern re-typesetting
• The practical landscape format of the original copybook

This edition is suited to adults improving their handwriting, students learning traditional cursive, calligraphers and lettering artists studying historical penmanship, teachers and homeschoolers interested in classical handwriting instruction, and collectors of vintage writing manuals and copybooks.
