Description
Be safe isn't a plan. It's the only instruction most kids ever get, and it gives them nothing to do when a situation turns.
The Street Smart Kid Survival Guide gives your child 46 exact moves, ages 8 to 12. Not only what to watch out for, but exactly what to do when it happens.
Tell a real gut warning from ordinary nerves , so an anxious kid isn't scared of everything Say no to a friend without making it awkward Spot how an online stranger works his way in , and stop replying early Handle the doorbell and the phone home alone , and get out fast if something catches fire instead of trying to put it out Catch the scam that looks like a message from their best friend YOU'VE ALREADY HAD THIS TALK
You worked this out the first time you let them walk somewhere alone. You said be safe, then said it twice more in different words, and stood at the window realizing you'd never told them what to actually do.
You've tried to bring it up. Ten seconds in you get the eye roll, the I KNOW, Mom, and it's over. Then you're awake at 1 a.m. going through the list again, and you fall asleep having taught him none of it.
And they keep going further out. The phone. The group chat. The sleepover at a house you've never been inside. The walk home you can't watch.
Every move works the same way. Here's the situation. Here's what you do. Here's why it works. Here's your backup when it doesn't. Here's the exact sentence you say.
HERE IS ONE OF THE 46
Somebody's walking behind your kid and something feels wrong.
First they cross the street. Crossing is an ordinary thing people do, and it tells them whether they're actually being followed, because he has to cross too.
If he crosses, they don't wait to be certain. They walk faster, toward people, and if he speeds up they run. And not home. Home might be empty, and it tells a stranger where they live. They head for the gas station on the corner, the one they walk past every day.
Then they say it out loud to whoever's at the register: I think someone is following me. Can I wait here and call my mom?
The one move that never works is standing there hoping it goes away.
That's one move. There are 45 more, four to six in every chapter.
WHY THEY'LL ACTUALLY READ IT
Eleven chapters, each one starting with a kid their age who blows it, and then doesn't. No lectures. Nobody in this book is the dummy. And it isn't built to scare them. Every story ends with the kid handling it.
WHAT IT ASKS OF YOU
Almost nothing. Your child can read it on their own, which is the point. The drills take ten minutes and a kitchen table. You don't have to be an expert or make a speech.
At the back: a fill-in family plan, the emergency numbers, and one page for you on what to say the first time they tell you something frightening. It decides whether there's a second time.
Written for ages 8 to 12, in language a third grader can read and a sixth grader won't roll their eyes at.
You won't be there. Make sure the plan is.
Hand it to them tonight.
