Description
Field-programmable gate arrays occupy a unique place in modern electronics. They are not general-purpose processors, and they are not application-specific integrated circuits — yet they borrow the best qualities of both: the flexibility of software and the raw parallelism of custom hardware. An engineer who understands FPGAs well can prototype a new digital system in an afternoon, verify it against real-world signals the same day, and, if the design proves itself, use that very same design flow as the starting point for an ASIC. Few tools in electronics offer that continuum from idea to silicon.
This book was written to give students, practicing engineers, and researchers a single, self-contained resource that covers FPGA design and prototyping from first principles to advanced practice. It begins with the digital-logic foundations that every FPGA design ultimately rests on, moves through hardware description languages and the full synthesis-to-bitstream design flow, and then devotes substantial attention to the practical craft of prototyping: clocking and reset strategy, memory interfacing, high-speed serial I/O, in-system debugging, and the disciplined verification methodology that separates a design that merely simulates correctly from one that works reliably on real hardware.
Three commitments guided the writing of this book. First, every concept is explained from the ground up, with the assumption that the reader has a working knowledge of digital logic but not necessarily prior exposure to FPGAs specifically. Second, wherever a diagram, waveform, or architectural illustration would clarify a concept, one has been drawn — this book treats figures as a primary explanatory tool, not decoration. Third, the book keeps a foot firmly in industrial practice: the design flows, timing-closure techniques, and debugging strategies described here mirror what working FPGA engineers actually do, using the vocabulary and tool concepts of mainstream design suites, without being tied to the specifics of any single vendor's software version.
The book is organized into five parts. Part I lays the architectural and digital-logic foundation. Part II covers design entry through hardware description languages and high-level synthesis. Part III walks through the complete implementation flow — synthesis, simulation, timing analysis, and place-and-route. Part IV is devoted entirely to prototyping practice: boards, clocking, memory, high-speed I/O, and debugging. Part V addresses advanced and applied topics, including digital signal processing on FPGAs, embedded processor integration, power and physical design, IP reuse, FPGA-based ASIC prototyping, and emerging trends such as AI acceleration on adaptive compute platforms.
Readers may use this book in several ways. As a textbook, it is suited to a two-semester sequence covering digital systems and advanced FPGA design, with each chapter's review questions and design exercises supporting coursework. As a self-study guide, the progressive structure allows a motivated reader to move from foundational concepts to a complete, working FPGA prototype. As a reference, the tables summarizing device resources, timing terminology, protocol characteristics, and design checklists are intended to remain useful long after a first reading.
I am grateful to the generations of digital-design students whose questions, confusions, and projects shaped the explanations in these pages. Any clarity this book achieves is owed to them; any remaining errors are my own.
