Description

Discover the remarkable life of Patrice Lumumba...
Patrice Lumumba really was one of a kind. Born into the colonial system of the Belgian Congo, he worked his way up from postal clerk to beer salesman to the founder of a nationalist movement and, remarkably, became the Congo's first prime minister at just 34 years of age, the moment the country finally broke free from Belgian rule in 1960. He was one of the architects of that independence, and one of its fiercest, most unapologetic voices. His fiery independence day speech, delivered in direct defiance of the Belgian king seated a few feet away, remains one of the defining moments in the history of Africa’s decolonization.

But sadly, Lumumba’s triumph was short-lived. Not everything went according to plan once independence was declared, and a storm of unforeseen crises would plague his brief time in office. Within months, he had been pushed from power entirely, and by January 1961, he was dead, assassinated at age 35 in a plot that implicated both Belgian officials and the American CIA. This is the life and story of Patrice Lumumba.
