Description

Cedar and Twig Meet Dandelion
Book 1 in the Cedar and Twig series

Cedar is a five-year-old boy who can hear what plants and animals say. Nobody believes him, except nature itself.

His best friend is Twig, a fast-talking squirrel who's always three steps ahead and never looking down. Together, they're about to meet the most overlooked friend in the yard.

When Cedar trips over a crack in the path, he discovers a dandelion growing where nothing should be able to grow. Twig wants to yank it out and move on. But the dandelion has something to show them, about roots that go deeper than you'd expect, about showing up first when no one else will, and about what it really means to give everything away and grow back again.

The botany in this book is real. Dandelions actually do break open hard-packed soil so other plants can follow. They feed the first bees of spring. They regrow after giving every seed to the wind. Your child will learn all of this — not from a lecture, but from a story about a boy and a squirrel and the small stubborn sun growing in a crack.

The humor is real, too. Wait until you see Twig's face when he bites his first dandelion leaf.

And here's what happens after the last page: your child will find a dandelion. In a sidewalk crack. At the edge of the driveway. Between the paving stones. They'll crouch down the way Cedar did. They'll blow the seeds and watch where they land. The book ends. The yard begins.

Ages 3–7. Includes a backmatter field guide and an outdoor mission.

Cedar and Twig is a series of picture books. Each one introduces a new plant friend whose personality comes from real biology. The characters are fictional. The plants are everywhere.
