Description

Digital electronics quietly runs the modern world. Every processor, memory controller, communication interface, and embedded controller that we depend on begins its life not as a physical circuit, but as text — as a Hardware Description Language (HDL) program that describes what the circuit must do and, often, how it must be built. Verilog is one of the two dominant hardware description languages used in industry and academia today, and an engineer who wishes to design digital hardware, whether for an FPGA prototype or a full custom Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC), must be fluent in it.
This book, Verilog Programming: A Comprehensive Guide to Hardware Description, Digital Logic Design, and Verification with Verilog HDL, was written to serve as a complete, self-contained textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Engineering, as well as for practicing engineers who need a thorough, structured reference to the language and its application to real digital design problems.
The book is organized to take the reader on a deliberate journey. The early chapters build the conceptual foundation: what a Hardware Description Language is, why Verilog was created, and how digital design differs fundamentally from software programming. The middle chapters present the Verilog language itself in careful, incremental detail — lexical conventions, data types, the four principal modeling styles (gate-level, dataflow, behavioral, and structural), operators, procedural statements, tasks and functions, and the often-misunderstood semantics of simulation event scheduling, blocking and non-blocking assignments, and timing control. Later chapters turn to design practice: how to write Verilog code that synthesizes correctly into real hardware, how to design combinational and sequential circuits and finite state machines idiomatically, how to build rigorous testbenches for functional verification, and how to model memories and use advanced constructs such as generate blocks and user-defined primitives. The book closes with complete, worked case-study projects — an ALU, a UART, a FIFO, a traffic-light controller, and a vending-machine controller — an introduction to SystemVerilog as the natural next step beyond Verilog, and a chapter of coding guidelines and common-pitfall analysis distilled from industrial RTL coding practice.
A conscious effort has been made throughout this book to explain not merely the syntax of Verilog but the underlying digital design intuition and the simulation and synthesis semantics that separate a functioning design from a subtly broken one. Every construct introduced is accompanied by complete, compilable code listings, and every major topic is illustrated with an original figure — timing diagrams, block diagrams, state diagrams, and structural schematics — drawn specifically for this book to reinforce the connection between the textual Verilog description and the physical hardware it represents. Numerous tables consolidate operator sets, keyword lists, system tasks, and comparison summaries for quick reference and revision.
Each chapter concludes with a set of review questions and exercises intended to test conceptual understanding as well as coding ability, making the book suitable both for classroom instruction accompanying a Digital Design or HDL laboratory course and for self-directed study.
No book of this kind is created in isolation from the enormous, decades-long collective effort of the digital design community, the IEEE standards committees who codified and refined the Verilog and SystemVerilog standards (IEEE 1364 and IEEE 1800), and the generations of textbook authors, tool developers, and instructors whose work has shaped how this subject is taught.
