THE EXQUISITE LIFE OF AN EX FLIGHT ATTENDANT: Travel, Desire, and the Cost of Living Untethered

He flew to 35,000 feet to escape the Delta—and spent decades learning he could never outrun himself. Born by the Mississippi River in Helena, Arkansas, Shannon Washington grew up navigating contradiction: church on Sunday and the sex trade a block away, a mother who was the first Black homecoming queen in an integrated school and a father shot dead at 23. He learned early that survival required knowing which version of yourself to show—and which ones to keep hidden behind the curtain. That gift for navigation carried him into the skies. As an international flight attendant, Shannon moved through first-class cabins and bathhouses, champagne-soaked layovers and hospital wards, Cairo and Accra, Paris and Dallas—living a life most people only see through airplane windows. But desire, secrecy, and the weight of an unlived truth have a way of following you across time zones. The Exquisite Life of an Ex Flight Attendant is a candid, unflinching memoir about what it costs to live untethered—and what it means to finally land. Shannon writes about race, queerness, intimacy, power, and the slow, necessary work of repair with the same precision he once used to read a flight manifest: nothing overlooked, nothing softened. This is not a story about arriving. It is about becoming—and the lifelong, often painful, sometimes exquisite journey of learning to move through the world as your whole, unmistakable self.
