Description
Evolution happened. The question is whether the standard explanation can account for what evolution produced.
Lloyd A. Merriam is not a biologist. He is a logistics expert who spent nearly two decades studying evolutionary biology and quantum physics on his own, and arrived at a conclusion biology has been missing since Darwin. Evolution, at its deepest level, is a logistics problem. The hard question is not whether variation occurs. It is how dozens of interdependent parts can be assembled in the right order, at the right time, without the in-progress organism being killed off long before the system is complete. Biologists have handed that problem to natural selection. Natural selection cannot solve it.
Darwin's Missing Mechanism makes the case. A parasitic wasp that zombifies a cockroach and walks it like a dog on a leash back to its burrow to serve as living food for its larva. A botfly that captures a housefly, sticks her eggs to its belly, and releases it to carry them to cattle she cannot approach on her own. A fungus that hijacks the behavior of an ant, commands it to climb high, lock onto a leaf, and die there, raining deadly spores onto the foragers below. These are integrated working machines. The orthodox account of how they get built — favorable accidents promoted by natural selection and accumulating over deep time — comes up short. Logistically, random mutation and natural selection offer no path to them. The intermediate forms required by gradualism are not merely missing from the fossil record. They would have been biologically untenable, half-baked wrecks.
The author's alternative is Noctogenesis: the idea that major evolutionary novelty is assembled in the dark, latent in the genome before it is expressed, and released only when enough of the system is ready to function as a whole.
This book lays out the puzzle without burying it. The full technical treatment, including the genetics, the physics, and the metaphysics, lives in its companion volume, Noctogenesis: Evolution's Quantum Secret. Its answer draws from quantum physics. Not as metaphor and not as new-age mysticism, but as the same physics that runs your phone, makes MRI machines possible, and governs the molecular machinery of the living cell.
This is not an argument against evolution. It is an argument that evolution's deepest mechanism has been misunderstood. Nor is it a religious argument. The explanation stays within Nature, arguing that it is stranger and deeper than the classical Darwinian picture allows.
For readers who accept evolution but suspect the standard story explains adaptation better than invention, Darwin's Missing Mechanism offers the puzzle, the cases, and a candidate answer grounded not in biology, but in physics. Life did not evolve by stumbling blindly through impossible intermediates. It evolved by bringing coherent systems into expression only when they could survive.
