Description

Learning Kotlin by Building Android Games
Learn Kotlin from Scratch and Turbo Charge Development Using AI.

This book teaches you to program in Kotlin by building small Android games, starting from no experience at all. Instead of spending the early chapters on app frameworks and menus, it has you drawing and animating on the screen from the very first chapter, using Kotlin and the Android Canvas directly. Each programming concept is introduced in a short theory chapter and then put to use immediately in a hands-on project, so you always see why it matters.

The book takes a deliberate path: it avoids Jetpack Compose, XML layouts, and game engines. You build everything yourself on the raw Canvas and SurfaceView. The trade-off is honest — you write more of the plumbing — but the payoff is that you understand how your programs actually work, instead of relying on machinery you cannot see.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

- Kotlin from the ground up: variables and types, operators, control flow, loops, and functions
- Collections: arrays, lists, sets, and maps
- Null safety and lambdas, two features that define modern Kotlin
- Object-oriented programming: classes, inheritance, polymorphism, and interfaces
- Threads and a real, frame-rate-independent game loop
- Drawing with Canvas and Paint, sprite-sheet animation from a texture atlas, and sound effects
- How to organize a growing project across multiple files
- How to work with an AI coding assistant effectively, and how to catch its mistakes

WHAT YOU WILL BUILD

The chapters alternate between theory and projects. Among the projects you will build:

- A bouncing ball, a touch-controlled shape, and a grid-based tile world
- A particle system, built first with plain variables and later rebuilt cleanly with classes
- A catcher game, and a defense game with several different enemy types
- A reusable, threaded game engine
- An endless runner with an animated character and sound
- A complete, wave-based arcade shooter with a menu, escalating difficulty, a high score that is saved between sessions, and visual and audio polish
- Two further games built with the help of an AI assistant, from a blank screen to a finished result

Complete, commented source code is provided for every project, along with the graphics and sound files used in the later chapters.

THE APPROACH TO AI

The final part of the book is about using AI to work faster, but only after you have the skills to direct it. The book is candid about what AI coding assistants do well, where they go wrong, and why being able to read and judge code is what separates genuinely useful AI help from a pile of code you cannot maintain. You learn to write clear prompts, review the results critically, and stay in control of your own project.

WHO THIS BOOK IS FOR

- Complete beginners who want to learn to program and find games more motivating than business apps
- Programmers coming from another language who want to learn Kotlin and native Android game development
- Anyone who wants to understand how 2D games work underneath, rather than inside an engine

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

A Windows, macOS, or Linux computer and Android Studio, which is free to download. You can run everything on the built-in Android emulator or on a real Android device. No prior programming experience is assumed.

By the last page you will have written a complete, polished Android game by hand, and you will understand every line of it.
