Description
Some parts of history are remembered every year. Others are left behind, quietly, as if they never mattered enough.
Between 1932 and 1945, Unit 731 carried out brutal experiments on human beings in occupied China. People were infected with disease, cut open while alive, and used as test subjects in ways that are difficult to fully comprehend. Most of them were ordinary civilians. Most of their names were never recorded.
After the war ended, there was a chance for accountability. It never came.
Instead, decisions were made behind closed doors. Information was traded. Evidence was kept out of courtrooms. The men responsible returned home and built respectable lives. They became doctors, academics, and public figures. The past they carried with them stayed hidden.
This book focuses on what happened after the violence stopped. It follows the deals that were made, the trials that failed, and the long silence that followed. It also looks at the people who tried, in different ways, to speak about it, often late in life, often alone.
The victims did not receive recognition equal to what was done to them. Many were never identified. Their families were left without answers.
This is an attempt to bring that part of the story into the open.
