Description

This is the story of how I was able to co-write and publish a Korean War diary book in a short time, while also reflecting on my life as an ESL teacher for nearly 20 years. It is an incredible journey rooted in my family’s military legacy, which ultimately inspired me to bring my grandfather’s words to life. My grandfather, Colonel Alfredo L Cayton, was a Filipino Korean War veteran and Supply Officer of the 10th Battalion Combat Team of the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea (PEFTOK). His diary, written while serving in Korea from 1950 to 1951, captures a pivotal moment in history through his eyes.
This book is also a tribute to my father, Brigadier General Emmanuel S Cayton (RET), honoring the extraordinary life he lived in active military duty and in his civilian days. I am immensely proud to have descended from great men, and I aim to continue their legacy of service through teaching and writing.
Beyond being a personal journey, this book reflects my life as an army brat, tracing my lineage back to my great-grandfather, Master Sergeant Tiburcio C Cayton of the Philippine Scouts 24th Field Artillery. It tells the story of how growing up in a military family shaped who I am today, and how my career in teaching English to students from Korea and other countries has been a unique extension of my family’s heritage of service.
Beyond family history, the narrative explores my nearly 20-year career as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, primarily to Korean students. The diary book was brought to life and published after 74 years when I met my first Korean historian student. He expressed a desire to read it in class. Through reflections and commentaries from my students, this book delves into the profound connections forged in the classroom and the enduring significance of South Korea’s armistice agreement in the Korean War.
