Description
A detailed, thoroughly researched and referenced account of Stevie Wonder's early years.
By anybody’s standards, it was quite a journey. On 13th May 1950, Saginaw’s St Mary’s hospital bore witness to the birth of a premature boy, permanently blinded shortly after, and a prayed for miracle that never came. Those events suggested some difficult days ahead for a sightless child, one quickly in tune with the music all around him. By the age of 12, ‘Little Stevie’ as he was dubbed, was in Motown’s fabled recording studios and was well on his way to becoming a teenage singing sensation. But this does not tell the full story...
In ‘Have Eyes To Wonder – The Early Years’, lifelong fan and chronicler of Wonder’s career Mick Hutchinson presents an informed telling of Stevie’s early life, from career threatening school dramas to ongoing friction inside Motown that forced him to fight for his own identity, as he sought his independence as a musical performer that would springboard him to world stardom, and a lifetime passage to the legendary superstar that he was about to become.
A fascinating and surprising account of a tough early life and the determination it took for Stevie Wonder to become the musician we all know and love.
Mick Hutchinson is the author of That Sounds Like Stevie! a complete journey through the 'other' and often lesser-known musical contributions by Stevie Wonder.
A great idea, beautifully executed. Record Collector 2020
That Sounds Like Stevie! Is not just a book for the Stevie Wonder fan but an absolute must for any music lover; you will be amazed at the fascinating journey that involves hundreds of tracks and thousands of facts about the musical legend.
I've read many books on Stevie Wonder and reckoned I knew a lot about the man. Well, this superb book has put me in my place. It's not a biography (although there is plenty about Stevie's life), but is packed with facts and stories that shine a new light on this musical genius. The book chronicles the songs written by Stevie and covered by other artists, and songs on which he guests. It must have taken Mick Hutchinson years to assemble this book and he seems to have left no stone unturned in his quest to find and record information.
This is a terrific book! A must for all Stevie fans and anyone interested in the history of popular music. It is hard to appreciate the reach of Stevie’s influence on others and his contribution to their success, but Mick Hutchinson’s exhaustive account does the great man justice. A book to read and then dip back into time and again. Wonderful!
