Description
The Historical Churches of the Caribbean Island of Antigua is a two-part book. Part one of the book will examine and analyse the complex relationship between the Older Established Churches, Slavery and their Black Converts; while Part two will showcase 24 historical churches and detail their history, congregation establishment, architectural skills and craftsmanship, and the strong influence they had on the religious and social life of the people.
According to the research evidence, missionaries and slave owners joined forces to convert enslaved Africans to Christianity. Both parties benefitted from this mutual agreement, as missionaries gained souls and slave owners gained a very obedient slave population. With the rise of black consciousness and a renewed emphasis on reparations for slavery, the descendants of slaves have begun to question Christianity's role in slavery, its abuses and oppression.
