Description
Julien Fédon: Revolutionary, Patriot and Insurrectionist — The Untold Story of a Mulatto Leader is the first comprehensive and immersive biography of Julien Fédon.
He was, and remains to this day, a hero 'in the minds and hearts' of Caribbean citizens for his brave fight against the 'mighty British empire' and for his strategic acumen that pieced together a 'ragtag army' of free and enslaved Africans, mixed-race elites, and liberal French Whites. — Kirkus Reviews
In 1795, nineteen years after Britain lost its 13 American colonies, it faced another humiliating defeat. This time on its sugar colony of Grenada when free French speaking people of color and French planters led by a mixed-race coffee plantation owner, Julien Fédon, rebelled and murdered the colony’s governor and other Britishers on a treacherous mountain peak. To end the 16-month rebellion, Britain dispatched General Ralph Abercromby, accompanied by thousands of troops including German and Dutch commandos. Julien Fédon fought to the bitter end even after the French military from Guadeloupe abandoned him.
The £500 sterling Britain offered to anyone for bringing Fédon dead or alive remained in the British treasury. Julien Fédon: Revolutionary, Patriot and Insurrectionist — The Untold Story of a Mulatto Leader is riveting and eye-opening as it unsilenced a part of the hidden history of the Americas and the Caribbean.
