Description
Xenaksiala elder Cecil Paul reflects on the Kitlope, cultural survival and the restoration of land and community through the image of the “magic canoe.”
Stories from the Magic Canoe of Wa’xaid gathers the words and teachings of Cecil Paul, known as Wa’xaid, whose ancestral home is the Kitlope on the northwest coast of British Columbia. The “magic canoe” is his image for a shared journey with room for everyone willing to paddle together despite strong currents.
Paul’s reflections connect personal history with the Kitlope, Xenaksiala identity, language, residential school experience, environmental protection and the work of restoring relationships to land and culture. The collection is rooted in his own voice and in decades of involvement with efforts to protect one of the world’s largest remaining unlogged temperate rainforests.
The book is suited to Indigenous studies, oral history, conservation, northwest coast history and land-stewardship collections. It offers a first-person account of survival and responsibility in which cultural renewal and environmental protection are inseparable.
