Description

Once or twice a year, Nick Skelton would take several groups of particularly adventurous Australians over the infamous Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea. In July 2012, after escorting one last group of thrill seekers back to the safety of Port Moresby and onto their return flight, he decided to stay with his local companion Ronald and skip the return flight.
For the next two months, Nick forges his way from the violent streets of Port Moresby and Lae, where he witnesses savage public beatings, to the treacherous slopes of the Black Cat Track, where he encounters cannibals. Onwards to the notorious Highlands, he summits Mount Wilhelm, the highest peak in Papua New Guinea, dives along the Robinson Crusoe coast of Madang to the brutal initiation rituals on the spiritual crocodile worshipping shores of the Sepik River.
Papua New Guinea delivers the adventure every young man dreams about. Bandits, insects and rabid dogs threaten him at every turn as he ploughs up and down through the mountains, rivers and jungles of the most dangerous country in the world. A forgotten land of charming characters, tribal laws and violent corruption struggling to come to terms with the modern world it has only recently found itself in. Nick dives into his journey headlong yearning to learn the secrets of a long forgotten culture and discover the lessons of a journey that has always, for him, been nothing less than a rite of passage.
